Specimen Required:

1 green-top heparin gel tube or 1 gold top serum gel tube.  Centrifuge to separate and remove serum/plasma from cells within 3 hours.  Send 1.0 mL (minimum volume 0.5 mL) serum or plasma, refrigerated.

Patient Prep:

Fasting.  Nothing by mouth except water and any required medications for 12 hours before being drawn.
Patient should not consume any alcohol for 24 hours before the specimen is drawn.

Reference Values:
Men 40-60 mg/dL
Women 40-60 mg/dL

Guidelines set by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP).

Interpretation:

Low < 40 mg/dL
Normal 40-60 mg/dL
Optimal > 60 mg/dL
Days Performed: Monday-Saturday
Days Reported: Monday-Saturday
