| Specimen Required: | Submit one of the following preferred specimen choices:
- Urogenital swab
- Throat swab
- Rectal swab
- Sterile body fluid
- Urine
- Eye
- Swab specimens should be collected and transfer to Stuart's or Amies transport media.
- Fluids should be submitted in a sterile screw cap container.
- Disinfectants should not be used for preparing the patient or lubricating equipment.
- Label specimen with source and/or method of collection.
- Submit to laboratory within 12 hours at room temperature.
Swab transports with a preservative ampule should be crushed for culture.
All specimens should be labeled with patient information, source of specimen (location), method of collection and the date and time of collection.
Cultures for N gonorrheae should be cultures within 12 hours of collection to ensure good recovery. |
