Specimen Required:

Respiratory tract secretions and aspirates, tissues, fluids, sputum, abscess material.  Source of specimen is required on the requisition and specimen.  Urine specimens are not acceptable.

Prepare and transport 2 slides at 20-25 or fluid in a sterile container.  If transport time will be longer than 24 hours, freeze at -20°C.

To prevent drying, submit specimen in a sterile, nonbacteriostatic water.  Do not use saline in the specimen.

Rejection:

Any specimen from non-respiratory site.
Non-sterile or leaking containers.
Specimen submitted in saline, formalin or viral transport medium.
