Submit liquid or soft stool in a dry, sterile container. Sample must conform to the shape of the container.
Rattle test: If after transferring sample to the container and sample rattles when shaken, the sample is not appropriate for C. difficile testing.
Due to the sensitivity of PCR repeat testing during the same episode of diarrhea is of limited value. However, if symptoms persist for 48-72 hours after the first collection/result AND C. difficile is still suspected, retest. Patients who test positive for C. difficile should not be retested within 10 days. Effective antimicrobial treatment requires 10-14 days.
